Week 2: Task

You are going to put together a presentation to be delivered in class on Monday 16th January on the task below.  It is up to you which format you present this in and you don't necessarily have to include in the final presentation every single detail about every film looked at, but rather more time should be spent on the last questions qhich require conclusions, judgements and reasoning to be made, and it is important that you refer to examples as evidence.  Presentations should not be more than 10mins and individuals should make sure they have copies of the work in case any of your group is absent.

In groups of no more than 4:

  • List the last 10 films you've watched and how you've watched them (i.e. cinema, DVD, PS3, Sky Box Office, LoveFilm)

  • FOR EACH BELOW, GIVE THE GENRE, COUNTRY OF ORIGIN, BUDGET, WHETHER THERE IS A 3D RELEASE TO COINCIDE, MAIN STAR(S) & ANYHTING ELSE YOU CONSIDER IMPORTANT

  • List the top 10 films in the UK Box Office (go to imdb homepage)

  • List new releases for January/February 2012

  • What conclusions can you make about trends in film production and trends in audience behaviour?  What do UK audiences seem to want?

  • Why do you think these films have been most successful?  Be as specific and detailed as you can; consider things like the importance of the star, the use of special effects, the concept, type of film, and your own ideas about what makes each film successful.

Friday 6 January 2012

  • Genre
  • Overview
  • Director(s)
  • Production company or compaines
  • Any other companies involved?
  • when was it released?  Is this a significant time?
  • how many screens was it released on here and in the US?
  • Trailer - what sort of narrative expectations do you develop?  How successful do you consider the trailer to be?  Look at the full length trailer and the teaser trailer if there is one.
  • Poster campaign (again, might include a teaser poster with ltd information) - how does it sell the film?  Consider the mise en scene and information given
  • consider the use of the internet in the marketing of the film - what sort of things were done?
  • Was/Is there any merchandise available alongside the film, or promos in the way of things like happy meals/giveaways/competitions
  • was there a soundtrack?  Is there any significance/relationship to who the artist is or what the song is?
  • who are the audience, what are their needs and how have they been targetted?
  • what was the commercial (i.e. $ + £) and critical success (reviewers responses) of the film?
